Prohibitory Act

December 22, 1775

Parliament passes the Prohibitory Act, cutting off trade with the colonies and authorizing the seizure of American ships. Colonial vessels and cargo are treated as subject to capture on the open seas.

The measure follows the declaration of rebellion and expands the conflict beyond land engagements. Trade networks are disrupted as commerce is halted and maritime activity becomes a point of enforcement.

The break extends to the water as well as the land.
