Proclamation of Rebellion
August 23, 1775
King George III issues a proclamation declaring the colonies to be in open rebellion against the Crown. The document calls for suppression of the uprising and directs officials to act accordingly.
Petitions from the colonies, including recent appeals for reconciliation, have not altered the course of events. The declaration formalizes the conflict and places colonial resistance outside the bounds of lawful opposition.
The divide is formalized.
