New York Troops Hear the Declaration

July 9, 1776

Washington orders the Declaration of Independence read aloud to his troops assembled on the parade grounds of New York. Officers read it brigade by brigade as evening falls across the city.

The army encamped here is outnumbered and awaiting attack. Washington believes the words may steady resolve.

The men who listen know the British fleet is visible from the shore.
