Philadelphia Hears the Declaration
July 8, 1776
The Declaration of Independence is read aloud publicly in Philadelphia for the first time. A crowd gathers in the State House yard. Church bells ring across the city.
The text has been adopted by Congress but not yet signed. Thirteen colonies have been declared free and independent states.
