Washington Leaves Cambridge
April 4, 1776
General George Washington departs his Cambridge headquarters with the main body of the Continental Army.
Boston remains under American control, but the British fleet has withdrawn and may reappear along the coast. Regiments march south, while detachments stay behind to manage defenses and supplies.
The army stretches along the roads, carrying what it can move.
