Evacuation of Boston
March 17, 1776
More than 11,000 British troops and loyalist civilians board 120 ships and depart from Boston harbor.
American forces hold Dorchester Heights with artillery overlooking the town and fleet, making the British position difficult to maintain. General William Howe oversees the withdrawal. Soldiers leave behind fortifications and supplies that cannot be carried.
The harbor clears, but the army’s next position remains unsettled.
