The Powder Alarm

September 1, 1774

British troops move quietly from Boston and seize stores of gunpowder near Charlestown, removing them to a secure position. News spreads quickly through the countryside that arms have been taken.

Thousands of colonial militia begin moving toward Boston in response. Although no fighting occurs, the rapid mobilization reveals how quickly local networks can act across the colonies.

The response forms before the situation is fully known.
