Liberty Seized

June 10, 1768

Customs officials in Boston seize the sloop Liberty, owned by John Hancock, on suspicion of smuggling. The vessel is taken under guard and moved to the harbor under control of the Royal Navy.

The seizure follows tighter enforcement of trade laws under the Townshend duties. Crowds gather and confront customs officials.

Enforcement draws a response that is no longer quiet.
