Last Townshend Act
March 8, 1768
Parliament passes the Vice Admiralty Court Act 1768, establishing new courts in colonial ports. These courts hear cases without juries, placing enforcement in the hands of appointed judges.
The change strengthens efforts to enforce trade laws. Merchants and shipowners face prosecution in courts removed from local oversight, where familiar protections are less certain.
Judgment shifts away from local hands.
