American Forces Hold at Sullivan's Island
June 28, 1776
American forces fire from behind palmetto fortifications on Sullivan’s Island as British ships move into range.
The fort’s soft wood walls absorb incoming fire while return shots strike the advancing fleet. Commanders hold their positions and continue firing through the engagement, maintaining control of the channel and denying passage toward Charleston.
The defenses hold under direct attack.
