Washington Arrives in New York
April 13, 1776
General George Washington arrives in New York and establishes his headquarters at 1 Broadway.
He begins inspecting fortifications around the city and its surrounding waterways, reviewing positions that must hold against an expected British return. General Charles Lee has already warned that the city cannot be held without control of the sea, though strong defenses might still exact a heavy toll.
The defenses take shape, but their strength has yet to be tested.
