First Townshend Acts

June 29, 1767

Charles Townshend, the Chancellor Exchequer, works with Parliament to pass the Revenue Act and Commissioners of Customs Act. New import taxes are levied on various goods not easily manufactured in America, and Writs of Assistance are renewed. Customs Boards are established to enforce regulations.

By focusing on imports, ministers present the policy as indirect taxes.

The approach changes, but the question of authority does not.
