Currency Act

April 19, 1764

Parliament passes the Currency Act, prohibiting colonial assemblies from issuing and using paper money. Debts to British merchants must now be settled in hard currency rather than local notes.

Colonial economies rely on local paper currency to manage a shortage of specie and keep trade moving. The restriction tightens credit and complicates everyday transactions.

The means of exchange becomes another point of control.
