Proclamation Line
October 7, 1763
King George III issues a proclamation restricting settlement west of the Appalachian Mountains.
The Crown and royal governor of Massachusetts, Francis Bernard, seek to reform colonial government and to stabilize relations with Native nations. With only ten thousand troops to police the area, many colonists ignore the proclamation.
The proclamation line exists on paper, but not in practice.
